In a good quality crimping tool, the point of the ratchet is to ensure that the crimp is fully and properly crimped so that the wires are squeezed to the correct pressure. The risk with a tool that doesn’t have a ratchet is that the user may not fully crimp the, err, crimp.

A good quality crimp when completed should be so tight that the connection is "gas tight". Meaning the wires in the crimp won't be affected by oxidation or other corrosion/deterioration (of course, the wire outside the crimped part and the crimp itself may corrode).

In the industry where I worked, they even sent the crimping tools away for "calibration". By this I mean, the pressure the crimp tool applied was tested.

Is a ratchet essential for individuals making up connections? No, of course not. But for a company that is supposed to keep to a "quality assurance" standard, it's a different matter.

You may not agree or like tools with a ratchet, but you did ask...
