I've found recently that the problem with the Arduino I was using to program the RCTP was that the external crystal I used for the Mega 2560 was a 50 ppm tolerance part, which although it worked wasn't accurate enough to program and verify the Mega in one go but changing the Mega 2560 crystal to a 20 ppm tolerance part solved the problem.
The CH340 Uno clone's crystal is a high tolerance part, higher than the crystals fitted to a Geekcreit 16U2 clone which needs a 20 ppm or better part to equal the CH340 Uno as an ISP programmer.
