If this works, then we just need a way to peek the memory from basic to check for the presence of the Speech! ROM, then use that above command to disable it. Anyone wanna try editing !boot of the TurboMMC SDCard and writing a bit of basic code that will do just that?

Reliably detecting the presence of a specific ROM is notoriously difficult.

I think this "fix" is best applied on a case-by-case basis, by someone who is actually experiencing the problem and knows what slot their speech ROM is in.
