Just purge every last battery you can. My experience is mostly in arcade PCB repair, so a similar vintage.
AAs will leak, especially Duracell which are the work of the devil - responsible for numerous destroyed pinball machine CPU boards.
Nimh and Ni-cd cells of all formats can and will leak all over the place and are highly corrosive - I had one PCB that looked like swiss cheese held up to the light.
Special lithium packs found in handheld consoles like the PSP will swell and leak, taking case with them.
I've even seen standard lithium coin cells leaking, in things made just 5 years ago.
My rule of thumb now is to remove every last battery unless whatever it is literally can't function without it.
