Thanks, very interesting (after some z80 wiki I vaguely wondered if the refresh cycles could be used as you just described but havent found any examples of machines using that yet).
Using the refresh cycles is a theory that has been thought about, I too am not aware of any hardware where it's used in practice.
From the technical perspective, one of the difficulties when designing the CPC 6128 was how to add the extra RAM. ..
Do you have any links to good explanations of the deeper technical details?
I think I may have misremembered. Having had a quick look at some Amstrad CPC sites, it was the design of third party external RAM packs for the CPC 464 rather than the design of the CPC 6128 that I was partially and inaccurately remembering. Sorry about causing confusion.

There may be some general information on the design process in the book by Alan Sugar: The Amstrad Story. But it's been a while since I last read my copy.
