I think I will have to carry on with my workaround of starting AUTO at a high enough number to run out of lines roughly around the end of the text file.
I also found that AUTO won't take any variables, it has to be numeric, so I can't do a calculation within the text file and use that in AUTO. I could construct a *KEY definition which would do it I think, if I could get the text editor to report the number of lines as a field I could insert into the text file at the appropriate point.
I'm using Kate text editor in Ubuntu to do this, and I did think it might have the facility to insert information fields into files, but it doesn't seem to.
