Many years ago I discovered I had a thing which was half an Econet cable soldered on to a bit of strip board with the wires each leading to a resistor and LED. I always thought it must be some kind of Econet tester, but it never lit up anything when I plugged the cable into my network. More recently I guessed that the resistors had been put on the wrong way round, so I desoldered them all, reversed the polarity of the neutron flow, and resoldered them, and then it worked. They were definitely chunky 1980s resistors, maybe more recent ones aren't as durable?
