Following the successful revival of one RiscPC in this thread, I have a second candidate for which I'd be interested in any tips. This one is showing signs, not exactly of life, but at least not being entirely dead. It's a Mark 3 board again, to which I've plugged in RO3.70, a floppy drive, 8M of RAM and a StrongARM.
Here are the observations I have made so far:
- The board is very clean, and doesn't appear to have any battery damage to speak of. The battery has been removed of course.
- The 'address walk' happens if I power up without the ROMS in.
- On power up, if Del is held down, it spins the floppy drive briefly, flashes the keyboard LEDs twice and then beeps. Thereafter, both the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keys toggle their LEDs on and off. However there is no video output whatsoever, at any point.
- There are no floppy POST codes.
- Pressing Ctrl-Break flashes the LEDs again, but thereafter they all remain off. Ctrl-Break doesn't do anything after that.
- I can't get it to beep in response to Ctrl-G.
I have it plugged into a flat screen TV via the VGA lead. On other RiscPCs, this has worked OK, and I have not had to worry about configuring the monitortype specifically for this setup - I assume it defaults to VGA and not a 15kHz RGB mode, right?
I have not renewed the CMOS chip, and I'm assuming it's probably dead, but that wouldn't be enough to prevent the machine from fully booting would it? Or could the settings be perma-scrambled?
