Hi!
Specs:
* Risc OS 4.39 soft-loaded, 4.02 ROMs.
* Strongarm 233 RevS & ARM610 tested
* Rev3 Mobo (No C32) - Like many it had battery damage, only found pin 1 of RP16 to be floating.
** CMOS area traces were mostly gone, so it ended up being easier to use a CJE bypass board,
** PC speaker sound is non-functional either, damaged traces again, wasn't too fussed about this.
** Hard drive activity LED traces also affected.
* Arcin32 + 2GB DOM
* Toshiba DVD-ROM IDE drive
* Etherlink 600 module, ROOL firmware (Which snuck in SharedCLibrary)
* PC Card (ACA56 DX4-100, 128KB Cache, with tantalum on C20, caps replaced, AN297 mods in place).
* 2x Samsung KM44C16104BK-6 x 8, single sided 64mb SIMMs, EDO, 5v and have CAS before RAS refresh.
* 2MB VRAM, replaced bank 2 with new chips as it was stuck at 1mb previously.
Issues:
A lot of abort on data transfer errors and freezing.
Let's start with the PC Card, MS-DOS will not install at all UNLESS I disable L2 cache, this has been the same on at least 2 PC Cards. Once MS-DOS is installed, I can't use it reliably with L2 enabled, barely anything runs, Heretic will start and bomb out just before entering a level. If I install PC-DOS / FreeDOS instead, things are generally better, I still need to disable L2 to install, I don't actually see any disk error messages, although I do get CRC errors in Zip files when extracting, mostly in larger Zip files. I know the card I'm using now works in another system fine. I tried to install Win 3.11, it hangs towards the end of the install, only tried a few times. I dare not touch Win95 haha!
No different with the Arm610. I did get 20 minutes of Duke3d in once with sound!
On the desktop side of things:
I get a range of issues in different apps, in the game SC2000 "abort on data transfer" error the address range mentioned appears to be SharedCLibrary but using the same files in RPCEMu with the same installed System ROOL modules has no issue, not much of a comparison, but at least I know the files are good (Arm610 and SA). !SI totally hard locks my system if I run it, !ARMSI runs !SICK will run also.
FTPc (multiple versions) will completely freeze the system transferring a file larger than 1mb, yet I can transfer any size of file using NFS & SunFish. That appears to stop happening if I don't use the Arcin32 and use a spare Arcinv6c, DMA issue? I can transfer gigabytes of data on the desktop between drives without issue however.
I have one other 16mb SIMM for testing, that gives me different issues, some "abort on data transfer" on boot, it's not reliable for any comparative testing, issues seemed to be the same from what I can remember.
Out of all this replacing, re-installing, re-testing... the only very persistent thing has been the motherboard, still not ruling out a RAM issue (as I don't know if the other SIMMs I have are good).
It could be a motherboard issue, just not sure where to start with that! Has anyone ever tried to troubleshoot anything like this? Any thoughts? Ideas on the approach? My oscilloscope-fu is weak, and the scope is only 18mhz, I'll do some probing if it'll get me more information about the problem.
Thanks for reading the great wall above, this is a bit of a culmination of other posts, I feel it's all connected.
